Session Information

The Motivation Gap: Developing Self-Driven Mathematicians

This session highlights four simple structures that maximize student growth during math learning experiences. We explore and unpack no-prep ways for educators to elevate their connections with students, how to foster student autonomy, ways to align student purpose with classroom goals, and how to amplify student self-efficacy as the ultimate confidence-boosting tool. Teachers will also explore language patterns that validate, support, and nudge mathematicians to chase learning for themselves.

The Motivation Gap: Developing Self-Driven Learners

In a world of carrots and sticks, we all long for the self-motivated learner. But where does inner motivation come from? Research in neuroscience and the social sciences show we have 4 core psychological needs, and when those are met, we ignite our own drive. Participants will experience multiple low-prep, hands-on strategies and practical language patterns to immediately implement that validate, support, and nudge learners (of all ages and with any curriculum) to chase learning for themselves.
